What is the AMC?

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is America's oldest nonprofit conservation and recreation organization. We promote the protection, enjoyment, and wise use of the mountains, rivers, and trails of the Appalachian region. We believe that the mountains and rivers have an intrinsic worth and also provide recreational opportunity, spiritual renewal, and ecological and economic health for the region. We encourage people to enjoy and appreciate the natural world because we believe that successful conservation depends on this experience.  See here for more info on the AMC.

Who are the Worcester Young Members?

The Worcester Young Members is a Worcester Chapter committee that organizes day trips, weekend trips, and various social, educational and volunteer activities. We especially encourage people in their 20s, 30s and young-at-heart who live in the Worcester area to share their love of the outdoors with others who feel similarly. Read more about us here.

How do I sign up for a trip?

Click on 'Events' button to see a list of planned trips. Use the email or telephone number provided in the listing to contact the leader or co-leader. NOTE: You do NOT need to be an AMC member to sign up: Everyone's welcome to join. Just be aware that we will screen participants for fitness level & required gear. Have fun!

Do I have to be an AMC member to go on a trip sponsored by Young Members?

While membership to the AMC is not required to participate in Young Members trips and activities, it is highly encouraged. Many people "try out" a trip or two and join soon after. Please remember that your $40 annual membership fee supports conservation, education and advocacy programs that help protect the wilderness. You will also receive the club's monthly hardcopy publications, AMC Outdoors.

When is it best to sign up for a trip?

Some trips fill up quickly. Do not sign up for a trip unless you are certain you can participate. If you do try and register for more than one trip on the same day or weekend, make sure to notify the leader of the trip you decide not to do immediately if accepted on another. Likewise, if you need to cancel, please give the leaders at least two weeks' notice. Wait lists are maintained on almost all trips, and there is often quite a bit of attrition. For trips that charge a fee to cover costs, the policies for payment and cancellation are up to the discretion of the leaders. Generally speaking, if you must cancel, you will receive a full refund if your spot can be filled by another participant.

Why am I screened for a trip?

Leaders must ensure that the group has comparable abilities and expectations for the trip. For the safety of all participants, a leader must ask you questions not only about your abilities and fitness level, but he or she must also make certain that you have the proper gear for the trip. If you are screened "off" the trip, don't take it personally. Leaders are often happy to offer suggestions for other trips in which you can gain experience and skills.

Who do I contact if I have any questions or concerns?
